Cuba's multi-racial heritage and unique position as the Caribbean's largest and least commercialized nation have allowed Cuban culture to flourish. The arts have been actively supported by the government, whose commitment to cultural development is reflected in: the founding of numerous theaters, local and national museums, and arts schools; and the establishment of a national film industry, among other cultural achievements throughout the country. The existence of nationally and internationally renowned cultural institutions such as ISA (Instituto Superior de Arte), El Conjunto Folklorico Nacional (National Folkloric Ensemble), the Havana Bienal, the National Ballet of Cuba, and Casa de Las Americas (a Latin America-focused cultural institution) reflects the continued development of Cuban arts institutions, while the carnival of Santiago de Cuba, charanga of Bejucal, and parrandas of Remedios in central Cuba reflect the vibrant popular traditions which color the rich cultural landscape of present day Cuba.

The American Friends of the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba facilitates cultural exchange programs between U.S.-based groups and individuals, and some of Cuba's leading arts and cultural institutions.
